Concert Review: Lana Del Rey, The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan, April 11

4_11_14_b_lana_del_ray_kabik-22Remember when critics slammed Lana Del Rey for her lackluster Saturday Night Live performance? I do, and I gave her a pass because I really dig her music (aside from Cedric Gervais’ overplayed remix of “Summertime Sadness”). And I was stoked to see the siren on her first tour stop. But it turns out she’s just not a good live performer: Her singing was so soft that audio issues plagued most songs; the videos looping behind her were more animated than Lana; she played solely to the front portion of the crowd, even stopping mid-concert to sign autographs and take selfies. Only the band brought much-needed energy to the stage. The teenage girls—who reportedly rushed the doors before the show—loved every minute, though, throwing roses and screaming loudly over each song. ★★✩✩✩
